'My whole life has been an attempt to make myself the skeleton in my own cupboard. I have been an outsider in my own biography, in my country's history, in the world's terrifying possibilities."
The House of Hunger is Dambudzo Marechera's first short novel. Whilst the book made him a spokesperson for the 'lost generation' struggling for independence in Rhodesia, his work ultimately made him a cult autjor for the generations to come- not just in Zimbabwe, but also the rest of the world. Marechera's dense prose has assured him a place in African literature as a stylistic innovator and rebel commentator on the ghetto condition. First published in 1978 in a volume with several short stories, in this edition it is updated with previously unpublished pieces to complete the collection.
